The Swedish Language

A North Germany language, Swedish is currently spoken natively by 10 million people, predominantly in Sweden as the sole official language. However, Swedish is also spoken in parts of Finland, where it has equal legal status with Finnish. Swedish language, just like Danish or Norwegian, is a descendant is a descendant of Old Norse, the common language of the Germanic tribes leaving in Scandinavia during the Viking Era. Out of all Scandinavian languages, Swedish is the one with the most speakers. All of these three languages are, however, usually understood across native speakers of the Scandinavian languages – especially in their written form.

The Swedish spoken and written language is standardized. Yet, there are distinct regional varieties descending from older rural dialects that still exist. These are:

  • Norrland dialects
  • Gotland dialects
  • Götaland dialects
  • South Swedish dialects
  • Svealand dialects
  • Finland Swedish (the variety of Standard Swedish and a closely related group of Swedish dialects spoken by the Swedish-speaking population in Finland)
